Good News Story

I attended a recruitment day held at Futures Park; the event was organised

 by JobCentrePlus and Rossendale council.

A very, very shy girl, (Hayley Brown) enquired about our project, as I

proceeded to talk to Hayley it was obvious that she was feeling down

because she couldn’t find employment. Hayley was interested in our project, I invited her to come walking with us on Tuesday’s in Rossendale.

Hayley turned up for the Tuesday walks; I paid special attention to Hayley,

trying to bring her out of her shell. The group also realised that Hayley was

very shy and needed people to start a conversation with her, as the weeks

went past Hayley expressed an interest in becoming a Walk Leader.

I kept the momentum up, realising that Hayley given a push in the right

direction would come out of her shell which would lead to Hayley having a

good interview, culminating in her finding a job. I offered the training to

Hayley who showed concern that she would have to stand up and speak to

a room full of other trainees. I explained that she would be with like

minded people who are also not confident; Kay Bailey offered to assist

Hayley on the training day.

Hayley and Kay Bailey attended the Volunteer Walk Leader training day;

Kay was great supporting Hayley during the training, again a lack of

confidence was the only problem.

Hayley continued to walk with us; I issued her with a WfH rucksack, Hi-viz

vest and not forgetting a whistle! Slowly, Hayley came out of her shell; she

can now strike up a conversation with a stranger in the walking group without feeling uneasy

Hayley attended an interview as a live-in cleaner at a 4star hotel in Malham, Yorkshire Dales, real walking country; the name of the hotel is The

Lister Arms. I suggested to Hayley that it would be a good idea to

tell the interviewer about her Walk Leader training and offer to take their customers on led walks.

Hayley attended the interview on 4 Feb, she txt me later in the afternoon,

she was successful in gaining employment with them, and Hayley

remembered to mention her Walk Leader training and showed her certificate to them.

I’m over the moon that Hayley has started her new job, possibly a new life, although sad that Hayley has moved on and we are left one short with our

tiny band of Volunteer Walk Leaders. I take the attitude that at the end of

the day we are trying to improve people’s physical and mental well being,

this case proves the point, Hayley is physically fitter with walking regularly

and mental a lot stronger with the confidence boost from people within the

walking group supporting her and attending the training which gave her

 the confidence to strive forward.
