How to get fit and have fun on holiday, including ideas for activity breaks and tips on how to motivate kids to get active.

One of the main excuses that we give for not exercising is lack of time. But on holiday, you've got plenty of time, so

make the most of it. Video: how to stay safe at the seaside

A holiday is the perfect opportunity to get more exercisebecause you can be as active as you want.

A holiday that involves more than lying on a beach can be an incentive to get active. The trip can leave you feeling

rejuvenated, positive and full of energy.

“Holidays are a golden opportunity to get active,” says Robin Gargrave, executive director of YMCAfit, one of the UK’s

leading trainers of fitness professionals.

“You may think that you want to lie by the pool all day, but that will make you more tired. You’ll feel more rested at the

end of your holiday if you're active.”

Active holidays are the perfect opportunity to get children moving. They may want to sit and play with their portable video

game, but once you get them doing something they like, and they make newfriends, they'll forget the video games.

celebration and enjoy the garden themed activities.

The event is being organised by local charities Age Concern and Groundwork Pennine Lancashire through their lottery funded

dwpUp to £20 million off fuel bills for poor pensioners as energy rebate scheme gets underway

“This scheme is a huge step forward in the way we help the most vulnerable people in society pay their fuel bills in the future. Fuel poverty remains a

massive concern and the coalition government is committed to being far more effective in the way it helps those most in need.

(Energy and Climate Change Minister, Gregory Barker)
Around 250,000 pensioners will start getting £80 off their next electricitybill from this month, thanks to a deal by the

Government and the leading energy suppliers announced earlier this year. Up to £20 million will be paid out by the

largest energy companies in a one-off rebate to some of the pensioners who need the most help with their fuel costs.

The Department for Work and Pensions is writing to all those who are eligible to let them know either that their rebate will

be paid automatically, or asking people to call our Helpline and confirm their entitlement.

The DWP shared some of its customer data securely with the energy companies so they could identify the poorest

pensioners.Steve Webb, Minister of State for Pensions, said: “This cash will help thousands of pensioners get help with

their fuel bills who might otherwise be struggling to make ends meet. As many rebates as possible will be awarded

automatically, however this will not apply in all cases.  If anyone gets a letter from us asking them to call our Helpline

they should ring straight away to make sure they don’t miss out.”

Those eligible are households where at least one person is aged 70 or over, receiving the guaranteed element of

Pension Credit but not the savings credit element, are responsible for the electricity account where they live and don’t

already benefit from a discounted tariff.

Energy and Climate Change Minister Gregory Barker, said:“This scheme is a huge step forward in the way we help

the most vulnerable people in society pay their fuel bills in the future. Fuel poverty remains a massive concern and

the coalition government is committed to being far more effective in the way it helps those most in need.”

The energy suppliers participating are British Gas, EDF Energy, E.ON, npower, ScottishPower, and Scottish and Southern

Energy and their subsidiary companies.

The Government will evaluate the scheme, which is operating under an existing voluntary agreement with these

energy suppliers, and see whatlessons can be learned for tackling fuel poverty in the future.

More information is available at Department for Work and Pensions or via the Scheme helpline on 0845 600 0033.

Volunteering at the London 2012 Games

Olympic Games 27 July-12 Aug 2012  732 Days to go

Paralympic Games 29 Aug-9 Sept 2012  765 Days to go

Every big sporting event relies on an army of volunteers to make them happen, and the London 2012 Olympic and

Paralympic

Games is no exception. But its not just at the Olympic venues where you can help out.

Heart of the action :Up to 70,000 volunteers from across the UK will be needed to help out at both the Olympic and

Paralympic

Games in the summer of 2012. From specialist to general volunteers, there's a huge range of tasks you could be doing,

such as

helping with stewarding, supporting contestants, driving VIPs around, or assisting in the media centre. It's a great

opportunity to

gain experience and learn new skills at a once-in-a-lifetime event.

Already 280,000 people have registered their interest to volunteer, but that doesn't mean you're too late. The application

process

will begin in July 2010 and remain open until all vacancies have been filled. You can register your interest by signing up

on the

official London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games website.

Big Society, Localism and the BME Third Sector

The Coalition Government have announced that their ‘ambition is localism’ and it is

expected that the Localism Bill will become law by November 2011. This means that there will be a ‘radical

shift of power from Westminster to local people’.
There is potential that this agenda could disproportionately affect BME communities and the BME Third

Sector and so One North West wants to collect responses to this agenda from across the region to be able

to influence the Coalition's programme and its local implementation.
You do not have to answer every question and the
survey should not take too long. Your

thoughts will be invaluable for us to lobby for greater race equality in the North West.

Burnley Community Network Showcase preparation....:

Over the past years BCN has offered platforms information to all Voluntary, Community &Faith groups and partners agencies

alike, to promote and facilitate network activities impacting on the Borough. This year is no exeption, and we are now taking up

registration of members (and non members) wishing to showcase their group and/or activities to the wider community completely

free of charge.

One of the showcases already on this autumn programme will be presented by Edward lee, an experience journalist, who recently

joined the CVS’s team to lead on this Heritage Lottery funded project.

With its 75th anniversary celebrations well on the way BPRCVS will mark the occasion, with the publication of a book and calendar

along with a touring road show and permanent exhibition.

The book, calendar and exhibition will all chart the history of the Burnley, Pendle and Rossendale Council for Voluntary

Service from its beginnings as the Burnley Citizens Guild to

the present day and also look to the future.

Edward is now looking to recruit a team of volunteers to fulfil a variety of roles. While some volunteers will be tasked with

interviewing people about their roles within the CVS or their memories – as either groups or individuals – of the CVS and how

it has helped people for the last 75 years; others will be researching information stored in local newspaper archives, town

and county record offices and the CVS’s own materials as well as source photographs relevant to the history which are suitable

for book and calendar publication as well as use on the exhibition.

Full training will be given in the use of the audio-recording equipment to be used for the interviews. Some interviews may also

be filmed for an audio-visual record to be part of the exhibition and CVS website.

The culmination of the 12 month project will be the touring road show and permanent exhibition.

At that stage, further volunteers will be recruited to help members of the public understand the relevance of the material on

display.

Edward will be presenting this project at the BCN showcase, September 17th (details on www.burnleycommunity.net) and

will be inviting members of the public, and readers, to join this initiative by telling him stories about the Burnley, Pendle and

Rossendale Council for Voluntary Service.

He wants to hear from people who have been involved as volunteers and from those who have been helped by the CVS and its

many projects. [Contact Edward on 01282 433740 or email edward.lee@bprcvs.co.uk ]
